CHANCE is a tutoring service provided to area high school students who need help in a variety of subjects. It meets once a week and gives Duke students the opportunity to interact with kids around the area in an academic setting. It meets once a week and is not a major time commitment.
Volunteer as a leader with a local Cub Scout Pack! Involvement ranges from long term to once in a while. For those interested and dedicated, APO brothers serve as Den Leaders in charge of a group of boys for the year. Other brothers are welcome to volunteer for a week to help with skills, fun activities, and interaction with the boys. The experience for both the boys and the brothers who volunteer is indescribable!

To help Chinese orphans through fundraising for foster care, renovating orphanages, financial aid for adopting parents, and surgeries for orphans that are "unadoptable" due to handicaps/deformities or on the verge of dying. Cultural activities are done with adopted Chinese children in the local area to foster pride in their birth heritage. Students are able to apply to go to China to live and work in orphanages, and this can provide a "summer camp" experience for the orphans. Students could advocate for the adoption of children they have gotten to know in the orphanage. We may also soon have a mentorship program for adopted children in the local area. We will try to foster a sense of community among local families. We may send things such as postcards to orphans in China.
Community organization that restores old/dilapidated homes using
municipal funding and
volunteer assistance that then sells to low- income families at a very
affordable price. On
a weekly basis, volunteers assist the organization in either
demolishing old homes or
working to build and refurbish the new ones.
From WCBS-- from Chapel Drive, take a left onto Duke
University Road, which becomes W. Chapel Hill Street.
Just before the stoplight at Kent Street, you will see the DCLT
building on your left (orange building). Turn left into the parking lot.
E.K. Powe Elementary School
The Genesis Home is a transitional housing shelter for single mothers with children of all ages. It assists families in establishing a stable household by providing job training and parenting sessions. The kids at Genesis Home are in need of caring, supportive role models. APO brothers generally serve as tutors, helping with homework or reading with the kids.
Take Main Street all the way to Roxboro. Go past Sati's, Torero's, the Warehouses, it becomes a one way street and you continue to follow it through downtown Durham. Eventually the road will bear right and then straighten back out again which is where it intersects with Roxboro. Talk a LEFT on Roxboro and then take an immediate RIGHT at the light (the Durham Public Library will be on your right). You'll see Genesis Home almost immediately. Turn Left and then Right and you can park either below or in the lot above.
On the way back you want turn left out of Genesis Home
and then make a right. When you get towards the Carolina Theatre you
want to make sure
you're in the middle lane so that you can turn RIGHT after you pass the
DATA bus station that will also be on your right.
That will put you
back on Main and you can take that straight back to East Campus.
"The club that beats the streets" is sponsored by the United Way. The club provides a variety of educational and recreational experiences for Durham kids of all ages. The first hour of the project is spent tutoring kids ages 7-15 and helping them with their homework. After the kids finish their assignments, volunteers can play basketball, football, pool, board games, etc. with them. The children are excited to see familiar faces each week!
The Durham Nativity School is a private middle school for
underprivileged boys. Their
goal is to educate these economically disadvantaged boys, aiming to
place them in private
high schools and eventually on to distinguished universities such as
Duke and UNC.
Essentially the school aspires to break the cycle of poverty for these
young men.
Providing service (through office maintenance, tutoring, and leading
physical activities)
to this orga nization will not only help the school to become an
established and successful
operation, but it will also allow the brothers of APO to show their
appreciation for the
opportunities that have been bestowed upon them (such as attending
Duke) and to help
others less
Enter 147 South from the ramp on the right. Get off at Alston Avenue
(Exit #11), and turn right (south) onto Angier Avenue. Go through
Dryver Street. The school is located on the third floor of the
Project Sunshine is a project where 2-3 APO brothers go at one time to
make arts & crafts projects with the sick children at Duke
University Hospital in hopes of uplifting their spirits during their
stay. We play with children that range in ages from toddlers to
adolescents in the pediatrics unit. There is some training involved for
interested participants.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club runs an after-school tutoring
program. Brothers
go and help the kids with homework, usually in reading and math. Grade
levels range
from kindergarten to high school. The kids are very energetic, and they
always appreciate
the help that is provided.
Triangle Residential Opportunities for Substance Abusers provides
educational, administrative, and housing programs for two-years to
individuals who have a strong desire to change their lives. Volunteers
usually prepare TROSA participants for the GED by tutoring subjects
including algebra, geometry, and reading comprehension. Volunteers
tutor one-on-one and thus are encouraged to come weekly in order to
work with the same individual over the course of the semester.

of the ramp in front of the parking lot.
