Chinese Heritage Language Schools -- Issues and Challenges
Sunday, October 10, 2004 8:30 AM-3:30 PM

Profiling Chinese Heritage Language Students and Their Parents: What are the students’ and parents’ needs? What are the schools’ goals in providing HL instruction to the children?

Assessment and Testing: What do HSK, Chinese SAT II, and Chinese AP mean for a child’s future and in terms of a child’s Chinese language proficiency? How are these tests connected to the National Foreign Language Content Standards and the Proficiency Scale of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)?

Curriculum and Textbooks: What are we teaching the children? How do these curriculum and textbooks align with our program goals and with the National Standards? How do we improve the current curriculum in order to meet the needs of the students?

Methodology: How do we teach these HL children? How do we increase the variety of teaching methods in order to move the children’s HL abilities forward?
