The information here should only be used as a guide for initiating a reimbursement system at your institution. It reflects the experience of various individuals in different parts of the United States and may not be applicable to all situations where EUS is practiced. We suggest that you review this information with your business office consultant before implementing it.
UPPER GI EUS
The EUS CPT code for upper GI exams is 43259.
LOWER GI EUS
Many people are using the CPT code for transrectal echography: 76872
when they do rectal EUS.
EUS GUIDED FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate)
Ken Chang has used CPT codes for upper and lower EUS guided FNA which
correspond to the percutaneous biopsy codes for the organs/locations
being biopsied. For example he uses 32405 for a FNA in the
mediastinum. (It's important that the ICD code supports the CPT code.
In other words, that the diagnosis listed, warrants a biopsy of the
area specified by the CPT code.) Ken suggests that you invest in a CPT
code book so you can look up the proper code number for the
organ(s)/location(s) that you biopsy.
INTERPRETATION OF EUS IMAGES
The general S & I code (Radiological Supervision and Interpretation
Code) for EUS is 76975.
For EUS with FNA Ken Chang has been using the S&I code 76942.
It's important to note that these codes have been used successfully as far as we are aware. However, they are only suggestions which should be discussed with your business manager before using.(ie we can't guarantee anything) If anyone has problems using them we can post a note on the AEC WWW bulletin board to warn everybody (&/or commiserate)

We hope that this service will enhance communication among those of us who are interested in endoscopic ultrasound. It offers an opportunity for one subscriber to inform the rest about important EUS issues, research activities, etc. It also allows individuals to direct questions to a large group with a wealth of EUS experience and knowledge.
Free access to the internet and free e-mail is available to all physicians through Physicians On Line. To find out more about Physicians On Line click here.
