About the Froshlife Movie Festival

Duke's Froshlife event is one of America's premier college/university digital movie festivals and is a signature event in each class' freshman experience. Now entering its seventh year, Froshlife has garnered regional and national media attention by bringing first-year Duke students together with video cameras and laptops to produce a story all about their first year at the Durham, N.C. university - in eight minutes or less. After an intensive, short-term production period in February, students pack Duke's Richard White Auditorium to witness the "world premiere" of the movies, which are judged by a panel of celebrities that frequently includes Duke's president or provost. Almost a quarter of each year's 1,600 freshmen participate in Froshlife as directors, crew, actors, or premiere-night attendees, making Froshlife one of the most inclusive and visible events that Duke students will experience at any time in their college career.

Here are some of the Key Events for the Froshlife Festival:

  • Study Breaks - Monday-Wednesday, December 8-10, 2008, 9-10 pm
Drop by your common area of your dorm during the first days of finals week for a brief respite from the endless studying, a quick sugar high, and some information about the festival. We will be displaying some of the movies from last year's festival and answering any questions you may have about the upcoming events.
  • Kickoff Event - Thursday, February 5, 2009, 6-8 pm
At this event, we will be distributing the equipment (cameras, laptops, tripods, etc.) that each team will use during the Production Period. We will also have plenty of documentation, staff members, and former froshlifers who can impart their invaluable knowledge about the in's and out's of this unique event. Also come to meet other students in your dorm who will make up your potentially award-winning Froshlife Crew!
  • Production Period - Thursday, February 5 through Monday, February 23, 2009
During this intensive 18-day period, you will transform your brilliant ideas from a couple scribbles on a piece of paper to the silver screen gem that it was always meant to be.
  • Movie Due Date - Monday, February 23, 2009 - 12-4 pm
During this four-hour window, you will be able to turn in your final movie at the East Campus Multimedia Project Studio in Lilly Library. There will be Multimedia experts on hand during this time period to answer any final questions you may have coming down to the wire. And yes, you'll have to return that sweet equipment, too.
  • Screening by Froshlife Planning Team - Wednesday, February 25, 2009
We will screen your movies for any violations of the rules and return them to you if there are any elements that must be re-shot or re-edited. Final changes will be due on Thursday, Feburary 26.
  • The 2009 Froshlife Premiere - Sunday, March 1, 2009, 8:30 pm
This is it. What you spent two-and-a-half weeks of hard work and sleepless nights working for. The big premiere night. Red carpets, theatre lights, entertainment, and lots more. Oh yea, and we show everyones movies! A panel of guest judges will be on hand to award various prizes including Best Actor/Actress, Story, Director, Movie, and more! Tell all your friends, shine your shoes, and don your finest get-up - you never know, you may be up on stage giving your acceptance speech by the end of the night!
