ORGANIZATIONS & EVENTS

NOTE: Some conferences leave their program information on-line after the event is over. I have decided that it is sometimes as useful to see what has gone by as what is forthcoming. But please pay careful attention to the dates of events liste d here. Some are long past.

The Society for Philosophy and Psychology
The purpose of the SPP is to promote interaction between philosophers and psychologists on issues of common concern. The SPP sponsors a four-day annual meeting, usually held on the first Thursday-Sunday of June.

The Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology
Founded in 1904. Its stated purpose is to promote philosophy and psychology in the Southern section of the United States by facilitating the exchange of ideas among those engaged in these fields of inquiry, by encouraging investigation, by fostering the educational function of philosophy and psychology, and by improving the academic status of the subjects.

Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness
ASSC promotes rigorous analytic research on consciousness. The official purpose of the organization is to encourage research within cognitive science, neuroscience, philosophy, and other relevant disciplines in the sciences and humanities, directed toward understanding the nature, function, and underlying mechanisms of consciousness. Any solid research on consciousness (and its related issues) falls within our area of interest.

Toward a Science of Consciousness
Scientists with unimpeachable credentials in a wide range of fields, from psychology to molecular biology to mathematical physics, have begun to assert that understanding the nature of consciousness is an important scientific goal, perhaps the most im portant question that science faces at the present time. But how to begin?

Cognitive Science Society Information
This is the Home Page for the Cognitive Science Society.

Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease
The home page of ARNMD, the oldest society of neurologists and psychiatrists in existence, founded in 1920. T he purpose of ARNMD is to keep practicing physicians in neurology and psychiatry, and neuroscientists, informed about state of the art research findings of interest to these ever more related disciplines, findings that are beginning to inform the thinking and practice of neurology and psychiatry.

Naturalism, Evolution, and Intentionality:
An Interdisciplinary Conference in the Philosophy of Mind
This conference will provide a venue for discussing th e following questions concerning human nature. How is it that some of the states of our bodies (certain brain states) are about things in the world? That is, how is it that they are intentional? What determines the content of those states and how do we in dividuate them? Does what we are thinking about affect our behaviour, and, if so, how? What role does evolution by natural selection have in explaining our capacities and attributes? Why are some of our mental states conscious? How do we ascertain what it is that others believe? How did language evolve, why are we so adept at it, and what is its relationship to other of our cognitive abilities?

Evolving the human mind
An international interdisciplinary conference on the evolution of human cognition. The evolution of the mind seems to us to be a topic which is ripe for further inter-disciplinary collaboration, amongst those who, from their different specialist persp ectives, are interested in such issues as: the general structure of the mind (modularity versus cognitive plasticity), nativism versus empiricism, adaptationist predictions about cognitive structure, evolutionary explanations of known cognitive structures . Such collaboration might involve psychologists, philosophers, anthropologists, archaeologists, zoologists, and neuroscientists. The current list of invited participants for the project is given at the end of this page. The intention will be to build a g roup of people who engage one another in genuine inter-disciplinary debate on this topic.

Dennett's Philosophy
Now that Daniel Dennett has synthesized, in three recent volumes, his career's work on philosophy of mind, intentionality, consciousness, evolution, ontology and ethics into a systematic whole, it is time for philosophers to scrutinize the corpus for its coherence and to motivate revisions to it where these seem necessary.

Supervenience, Causality, Mind and Action
The program will consist of a series of papers falling under the general theme of "Supervenience, Causality, Action and Mind": this encompasses four inter-related focal issues which together characterize much of the work of Davidson, Dretske and Kim.

PUBLICATIONS
Brain and Mind
Brain and Mind will provide a forum for interdisciplinary communication throughout the neurosciences. Unlike existing interdisciplinary journals, it will target exclusively researchers investigating brains and nervous systems. The overarching aim is to exclude no one doing high-quality neuroscientific or neurophilosophical research interested in communicating results to a wider audience.

BBS is an international, interdisciplinary journal of "open peer commentary." BBS publishes important and controversial interdisciplinary "target articles" in psychology, neuroscience, behavioral biology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence , linguistics and philosophy.

Journal of Consciousness Studies
How does your mind relate to your brain? Can computers ever be conscious? How is conscious experience generated from neural processes? These questions are being keenly debated in fields as diverse as cognitive science, neurophysiology and philosophy. The Journal of Consciousness Studies is a new peer-reviewed journal which examines these issues in plain English.

Minds and Machines
Minds and Machines affords an international forum for discussion and debate of important and controversial issues concerning significant developments within its areas of editorial focus. This journal is intended to foster a tradition of critici sm within the AI and philosophical communities on problems and issues of common concern. Its scope explicitly encompasses philosophical aspects of computer science.

Psyche: an interdisciplinary journal of research on consciousness
Psyche is a refereed electronic journal dedicated to supporting the interdisciplinary exploration of the nature of consciousness and its relation to the brain. Psyche publishes material relevant to that exploration from the perspectives afforded by the disciplines of cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, physics, neuroscience, artificial i ntelligence and anthropology.

PROJECTS AND EXHIBITS
Mind and Body:
RenéDescartes to William James
This web exhibition is a modified version of the catalogue that accompanied the Exhibition of books from the collections of the National Library of Medicine, held in honor of the Centennial Celebration of the American Psychological Association, August 7 to December 15, 1992.

Non-Cartesian Cognitive Science
It is the aim of this page to bring together non-Cartesian approaches to the study of cognition. That means that the main point which holds this page together is the idea that mind and body form a unity, not a union. Guttorm Floistad (1983) speaks of Spinozism to allude to non-Cartesian approaches to the mental. Under that heading, there is room for many different themes.

Artificial Intellegence
This site is meant to be an educational overview of Artificial Intelligence, created for ThinkQuest, a national high school web design competition.

Brown University Brain Sciences
Research in Brain Science addresses questions about some of the most challenging and complex brain functions. Our research areas include und erstanding what the eye tells the brain and how we recognize objects; how behavior, perception and cognition emerges from the activity of networks of neurons; what are the mental processes through which knowledge is acquired and used; and through which we create, understand, and express language; how we learn and remember; and how genes control such activities. We also explore how neurons communicate with each other, how the brain wires itself, and how molecules and receptors give neurons their unique pro perties. We are also interested in how to build machines that can emulate brain functions to improve our lives.

Toward t his end, we employ the resources of computational neuroscience and biological modeling, drawing empirical data from the neurosciences, molecular biology, and behavioral psychology. In keeping with our belief that experimental results from computational mo dels can further the research efforts of 'wet lab' investigations, we are committed to incorporating the relevant neurobiological and behavioral detail into our computational models.
