Maab Ibrahim, T'12
Maab Ibrahim is from Richmond, Virginia. She was born in Falls Church, a suburb outside of Washington D.C. Between growing up in Virginia and Ontario, Canada, as well as spending several summers in Sudan, her life has been a series of departures and landings.
She attended Meadowbrook High School where she received her International Baccalaureate Diploma and explored, through research and experience, her interest in race relations in Sudan. As a junior, she was President of the World Culture Club and as a senior, served as President of the Monarch Players Drama Club. She also held leadership positions in the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Roaring Regiment Band. In the community, Maab co-wrote A Place Called Home, which, after winning SPARC: New Voices for the Theater, was performed at the Firehouse Theater. She spent the summer of 2008 as an Obama Organizing Fellow, working in conjunction with grassroots leaders and campaign staff at the Virginia Obama Headquarters.
Her most notable achievement, however, has been receiving the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship. The Reggie Program has put her in a community of leaders who support and inspire one another. They are not just peers, but friends who remind her that her dreams are never too big. Like her, they are dedicated to serving others; therefore, they are often taking on impressive tasks and leadership positions. Maab loves that despite their achievements, the Reggies mantain humble, refreshing personalities and a close community. She is as likely to call a Reggie for help finding an internship in Ghana or studying for an exam as she is for dinner at the 'Dillo and a game night of Mafia and Taboo (very competitive Taboo, by the way).
Since arriving at Duke, Maab has acted with the Karamu Theater Group, spoken as a panelist at Duke AMES's discussion on race relations in Sudan, and become a Baldwin Scholar. She is considering a Public Policy major, pre-medicine, and the Global Health Certificate. Please feel free to e-mail her with any questions! maab.ibrahim@duke.edu
