LUCAS VAN ROMPAY (2000) earned his Ph.D. from the University of Louvain (Belgium) in 1976, where he studied classical philology and Semitic languages & literatures. Between 1977 and 2000, he was professor of Aramaic at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands). His publications include text editions with annotated translations of Syriac Old Testament commentaries as well as many articles on Syriac literature and the cultural history of Eastern Christianity. His present projects include: (1) the catalogue of Syriac manuscripts kept in the Egyptian “Monastery of the Syrians” (coauthored with Sebastian Brock); (2) an edition with French translation of the fourth-century Commentary on Genesis by Eusebius of Emesa, involving the Greek, Armenian, and Syriac branches of the tradition (coauthored with Françoise Petit, Louvain-la-Neuve, and Jos J.S. Weitenberg, Leiden); and (3) the study and edition of Syriac inscriptions found in Egypt.
