PAUL POPOWICH
As
"MR.
SMITH"
The
star of Twice in a Lifetime, Paul
Popowich, is no angel. Not yet, anyhow. But throughout the 22-episodes of the
television series, he is working on earning his angel wings.
Popowich
plays Mr. Smith, a celestial emissary who helps souls who have recently died
return to earth and to the lives they once had. He guides them to become
accountable for their errors of judgment or character flaws and to win a second
chance at life. Smith, himself, does not remember his own past life but with
every assignment as a heavenly ambassador he learns a new and valuable lesson
about human nature. He hopes that he is earning his own chance to live twice in
a lifetime.
Mr.
Smith is a challenging role and extremely fulfilling from an actor's point of
view. Popowich plays a new character every week because he returns to earth as
a different persona. For example: one week he is a priest, the next week a
slick dating service operator. And
that's just two of 22 personalities!
Popowich
welcomes this breadth of artistry, and he appreciates the speed with which Twice in a Lifetime cast and crew labor.
Every week there is a new story, new sets of characters, new situations and
locations.
"It keeps
me sharp as a performer. The show allows me to take risks and explore unique
characters each week," says Popowich. "I always admired actors who
can be chameleon roles."
When Popowich
is not working, his rare free time is spent playing piano, guitar, writing
songs or seeing live music at clubs around Toronto. Before heading to Toronto, he sang with a rock band in Los
Angeles. Popowich is also a visual
artist, utilizing his talent to paint and sketch during his free time from the
show.
Born in
Hamilton, Popowich was raised in Stoney Creek, Ontario. In high school, he
studied dramatic arts and classical piano. When he was 15, he landed his first
professional acting role in the feature Tommy
Tricker and the Stamp Traveler with La Fete Productions.
Popowich has
performed in numerous features and television series. His most recent feature
films are two independent efforts: Silver
Man and the comic feature Vampires
Anonymous. In 1999, he starred in
the Miramax horror film Children of the
Corn 666.
On the smaller
screen, Popowich starred in the syndicated series Hardy Boys and MTV's Catwalk.
He has played recurring roles in Beverly Hills 90210 and in fellow
Canadian James Cameron’s new series, Dark
Angel.
"From an early age I've loved film, especially those with fantasy elements," he says.
As an actor,
he especially enjoys playing complex characters – and Mr. Smith of Twice in a Lifetime is certainly one of
them.
"Smith is
a reluctant angel. He's full of attitude, doubts, questions and flaws. That
makes him interesting."
