Study Abroad: Japan

Duke does not administer any study abroad programs in Japan. However, the following six programs have been approved for participation for either the summer, semester or full academic year. Though these academic programs have been approved by Duke, in order to receive transfer credit upon successfully passing the course (students need to receive a C- or above to earn a maximum of four transfer credits per semester), students will need to first verify that the courses they plan to take on the approved program in Japan are listed in the GEO-U’s database of pre-approved courses.

For any study abroad course not listed in the database, students will need to get approval from the GEO-U and their Director of Undergraduate Studies before they depart for the program in order to be eligible for transfer credit afterwards.

Students should also visit Duke's Global Education Office for Undergraduates website and the individual program links for specific details.

The program fees listed below do not include airfare, miscellaneous expenditures, or the Duke University study abroad fee of $4,580 (2015-2016) per semester. This fee offsets the costs of maintaining a Duke student’s enrollment while the student is studying abroad on a Duke approved semester program; it also enables the student later on to transfer full credit for the work that they have successfully completed abroad.  Note that this Study Abroad Fee does not apply for summer programs. More information on Duke’s study abroad policies and procedures can be found here.
