About Us

Active Minds at Duke is a mental health education, awareness and advocacy organization that aims to decrease the stigma related to mental illness.

Active Minds Inc. was started in 2001 by Alison Malmon. She created the first chapter at the University of Pennsylvania and it has since spread to Georgetown University in Washington D.C.  Active Minds, Inc. is the national headquarters for all Active Minds on Campus chapters. The headquarters is located in Washington, DC, with campus chapters at colleges nationwide!

The Duke Chapter began in February 2004 and was founded by Dave Strauss (class of 2005), Logan Leinster (class of 2006) and Cole Wright (class of 2006). It is affiliated with the Graduate and Professional Student Council and has a Duke Student Government (DSG) charter.SpacerDave, Logan and Cole were all students in Tony Brown’s Enterprising Leadership class (Public Policy 144s) in the spring, 2004 semester when Active Minds at Duke was founded. The three students produced a business plan for Active Minds at Duke and gave the following presentation at the end of the semester. Active Minds at Duke is now part of the Enterprising Leadership Incubator.
