Academics: Graduate Program / Graduate Certificate for East Asian Studies

Students who are enrolled in any of the Graduate School’s master’s or doctoral programs, with the exception of the MA in East Asian Studies, are encouraged to document their specialization in the region by earning a Certificate in East Asian Studies.

Students must formally apply for the certificate and complete at least four courses (12 credit hours) from an approved list of courses in East Asian studies. These courses must be drawn from at least two different departments or programs. In addition to this coursework, students must obtain a minimum language proficiency in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, equivalent to two years of university-level study. Language courses at the fourth year proficiency level and above may be counted as one of the four East Asian studies content courses applied toward the certificate. An Asian/Pacific Studies Institute Faculty Advisor will be assigned to each applicant.

The Certificate is signed by the Director of Graduate Studies for East Asian Studies and the Dean of the Graduate School, and appropriate notation is entered on the student’s transcript. Students interested in obtaining a Certificate in East Asian Studies should submit an application to the APSI Program Coordinator.
