The 2008 Short Screenplay Competition officially begins at 12:00 AM on October 15, 2007 and ends on November 30, 2007 at 11:59 PM.

FORMAT

- Scripts must be written in the proper screenwriting format. An example of this format can be found in our Guide to Short Screenwriting Packet available in the Resources section of the site.

- Scripts must not exceed 8 pages in length (excluding title page).


ELIGIBILITY

- Per screenplay, there can be up to three writers (including revisions).

- Writer(s) must be currently enrolled at one of the following Universities:

        Duke University (Undergraduate & Graduate)

        North Carolina Central University (Undergraduate)

        University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Undergraduate)


CONTENT

- Only original scripts will be considered (i.e. scripts that have been previously produced are ineligible. This includes work done at the University).

- While writing, keep in mind that scripts must be able to be realistically shot and edited within the 24 hour time frame.

- Successful short films usually have 1 to 2 main characters. Please limit your scripts to no more than 4 main characters.


SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

- Scripts will be submitted by email and should be in a widely-read format such as .pdf or .doc.

- Students may submit as many scripts as they would like to the competition.

- Scripts should only be labeled with a title. All other information should be submitted in a separate document title page.

- The separate title page document must include all of the following information:

    -Title of the script

    -Genre

    -Breakdown of main characters

        (e.g., 1 20 yr old female, 2 40 yr old males)

    -One or two sentence logline (synopsis) of the script

    -Name of the writer(s)

   (Please include the following for each writer if there is more than one.)

    -Email address

    -Contact phone number

    -Class Year

    -Major/Minor

- Screenplays can be submitted at anytime between October 15, 2007 at 12:00 AM and November 30, 2007 at 11:59 PM Monday, December 17 at 11:59 PM.

Last year, Duke Professor Elisabeth Benfey led two screenwriting workshops on campus in conjunction with the MMM competition. We will be having at least one this semester which will be open to Duke students as well as Durham and the surrounding communities and universities. Anyone interested in learning more about screenwriting are invited to attend.
