The Hawaiian Monk Seal is the only endangered marine mammal whose entire home range lies in the United States. With less than 1200 individuals left on the Hawaiian Islands today, the species is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. With both natural threats and human-induced threats ranging from habitat loss due to erosion and sea-level rise, shark predation, high juvenile mortality, entanglement in fishing gear, and disase this small population of seals is fighting for its survival.
