Some may wonder why blood donations are constantly needed. Unfortunately, red cells are perishable and must be used within 42 days. Because blood is perishable, the Red Cross must collect more than 1,500 units every day to meet patient needs in our area.

The ongoing need for blood is a result of several factors. Advances in medical technology in organ transplants, cancer treatments, and much more have caused a dramatic increase in the need for blood and blood products. Although almost everyone will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime, only a small percentage of the population donates blood, and most of those donors give only one time per year.

We encourage you to schedule an appointment or walk-in as soon as possible, and thank you for your generosity and support.

By age 72, 97% of the population will have required a blood transfusion, but only 5% of the eligible population gives blood.

Every 17 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.

Each unit of blood you donate can be used by up to three different people.
