Each group will review different videos from the “Floating Population” module. As you watch the video clips, try to guess the ages as well as the social or educational backgrounds of the people being interviewed. Do the same for the locations of each scene. Pay attention to the accent and the rhythm of the speech when the interviewees speak. Listen first for the gist, then again for as much detail as you can. Do not look at the transcript until you have listened to each video three times.

Procedure/活动流程:
  1. Divide the students into three groups.

(Note to the teacher: The videos assigned to each group in the table below are only examples. You may assign different videos as you see fit. At the end of the activity, each group of students will report their findings from different video interviews in class and learn new information from each other.)

Group AListen to the videos Part I & II in the “Interview with an Educator” sub-module
Group BListen to the videos in the “Guanyuan Market” sub-module and Part III in “Interview with an Educator”.
Group CListen to the videos “The Morning Market Officer” and “Tianshu (Sweet Potato) Seller”.

    • View the videos and check comprehension by doing the online review exercises.
    • Create your own glossary and sentence example table individually beforehand.
    • Discuss the content of the videos and work together with the teammates to complete the following table.

      A / B / C 组
      (Circle One)
      流动人口对城市发展的正面影响
The pros of having migrants from the countryside in the city
      流动人口对城市发展的负面影响
The cons of having migrants from the countryside in the city
      至少各列出三点

  2. The three groups will meet in class. Each group will first play their assigned videos. Then, each group will summarize the different viewpoints of the interviewees and share their thoughts with other groups. Last, everyone will discuss the differences that they have detected in the accents, the rhythm of the speech, and the manner of delivery among different interviewees.
